Saving the GOP's Soul

Great piece over at The Right Christians today that asks the vital question, "Does the Republican Party Have a Soul?" I would agree that it currently does not, and by any objective Christian standard is a party that is almost Satanic in its hatred of the poor, treatment of the sick, attacks on countries that have not attacked us, willingness to lie, and its utter and complete contempt for democracy. It is in fact a party whose soul has been stolen by a relatively small group of extremely evil and venal men and women. Is there a man or woman who can save it?

Surely the party of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Barry Goldwater cannot become the party of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter without a fight from Republicans who still believe in decency and truth. Who might be willing to stand up and offer Republicans the opportunity to vote in their primaries for fiscal responsibility, a foreign policy that seeks to build rather than destroy international consensus, and backing for the troops that have been placed in Iraq and Afghanistan without regard to political expediency?

My choice would be John McCain, a man I greatly admire, but the piece gives several equally viable alternatives. Necessary reading, friends.

Thunderbird pilot ejects just in time! Film at eleven? Nope, pretty good film at! I've seen the Thunderbirds several times, from their F-100D days, through the F-4s, T-38s, and now their F-16s, and they always put on a wonderful show. It's great to hear that the pilot is OK and that no one on the ground was hurt.
