Still Getting Ready...

...for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, that is, which premieres tomorrow. I promised to discourse grumpily on the stupid title, so here I go. Master and Commander and The Far Side of the World are two books in the Aubrey/Maturin series by "Patrick O'Brian," Master and Commander being the first. Now some nitwit involved with the film - probably the studio - evidently had the brainwave that "Master and Commander" was the title for the whole series, like The Lord of the Rings, and probably saw visions of a long series of sequels. The trouble is, Master and Commander is a rank in the Royal Navy of the time, and signified the commander of a ship too large to be commanded by a lieutenant and too small to be commanded by a Post Captain - usually a sloop. In the first book of the series, Jack Aubrey was indeed a Master and Commander. But in Far Side of the World, he's a Post Captain. So the title is simply stooooopid. Oh well, they had to screw something up, right? And this can't possibly be as egregious as those "adaptations" of C.S. Forester that A&E has been airing, although don't think fans haven't noticed that the story has been moved from the War of 1812 back to 1805 and the opposing ship morphed from American into French Hmmm.

Reviews here and here.
