Certain left wing bloggers are spewing hatred and in some cases absolute filth over the election of Cardinal Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI, including calling him, a draftee in World War II like millions of other innocent German men, and before that a member of the mandatory Hitler Jugend, a Nazi. Here and here are two examples. And the right wing is going to laugh and point and say, see?
If you are concerned about the new pope, it's legit to say so and comment on your reasoning. Many have, and I don't have a problem with that; I think he's probably too conservative to help the Church at this time with the terrible problems it faces. I'm also willing to wait and see; after all Blessed John XXIII was supposed to be a Pius XII clone. Popes often try to signal something with the papal name they select. The last Benedict, Benedict XV, was a moderate pope after an extreme conservative. Who knows what this Pope wishes his last legacy to be?
But for people to whom the only acceptable pope would have been a lesbian from the third world who would conduct rites of Astarte in the Vatican - hell, you shouldn't even comment. You wouldn't have liked any selection the cardinals made. You believe the Church should adopt the "do it if it feels good" dogma and guess what, that isn't going to happen.
